Grief I hadn’t processed, just tucked away beneath the work, events, and shopping I’ve been outsourcing as a distraction.

Getting back to dancing became the key that unlocked it.

Unexpectedly, but necessarily.

That moment made something very clear to me: I needed to be more intentional about returning to the movement I once loved as a child. Specifically, dancing and tennis. I was intentional about choosing practices that felt in sync with my energy instead of forcing my body into routines that drained me or dulled my creativity. Movement that encouraged me to enter a flow state, where my nervous system could soften and long-buried emotions could rise to the surface, is what I desired.

What I later realized was that I wasn’t just exercising, I was engaging in somatic therapeutic work. Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach that recognizes how trauma, stress, and challenging emotions are stored in the body. At that very point in my tennis practice, I lost count of the number of times I imagined a tennis ball as an ex’s head. I used to unleash every ounce of anger and frustration on those courts. But what mattered most was this: movement always brought me back to acceptance instead of chaos. To release instead of crashing out. It brought me back to my center, back to me.

Our bodies are our oldest and wisest companions. They speak truths that words can’t always express. Body language reveals what goes unsaid, and actions expose what stories try to mask. It’s when we lean into the body’s wisdom with curiosity rather than fear that we open a doorway to deeper self-awareness and healing. Yet emotional awareness is often undervalued in today’s society. What’s labeled as “too sensitive” is often the very skill that helps us recover from traumatic events. Being courageous in befriending our bodily sensations is how we learn to regulate ourselves, and not repress. What’s beautiful is that this ability isn’t rare. It’s innate. No one is exempt from activating it.

In The Body Keeps the Score, Bessel A. van der Kolk writes, “Individuals who lack emotional awareness are able, with practice, to connect their physical sensations to psychological events. Then they can slowly reconnect with themselves.” This confirms that the mind can be reeducated to feel, and the body can be supported in tolerating and identifying those sensations to make decisions from an empowered place. This is why somatic practices matter. Healing isn’t always cognitive. Dance Movement Therapy, yoga, and mindful motions restore flow where stagnation once lived. They allow us to inhabit our bodies without being overtaken by the imprints trauma left behind. Instead of pushing through or disconnecting, we begin rewiring ourselves toward honesty, acceptance, and self-trust.

This idea of returning to the body isn’t new. I remember seeing it play out in a sitcom episode that stayed with me for years. The episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air where Aunt Viv, burnt out and having a midlife crisis, returns to dance (her first love). When she showed up for the final audition, she outshone the younger dancers who mocked her for her age and looked damn good doing it! Witnessing her reclaim her power through movement felt deeply familiar.

When I recommitted to consistent movement, especially pole dance fitness, I found myself back in a flow state. Pole demands presence, patience, and vulnerability. It carries a divine feminine energy that blends strength and sensuality seamlessly. Here, my movements felt both powerful and soft. And my self-confidence grew not from performance, but from trust.

Having a safe space to move (especially to open my hips, often called the body’s emotional junk drawer) unlocked emotions I didn’t have the language or support to process at the time. In somatic therapy and yoga philosophy, the hips are known to store fear, grief, and shame. No wonder tears came up for me in my first few Intro to Pole classes. I was being reminded that my body remembers what my mind tries to forget.

If you’ve been feeling disconnected, burnt out, or numb, I invite you to notice where your body might still be holding something your mind has already moved past. Maybe healing doesn’t require more thinking. Maybe it simply asks you to move.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" All the while offering guidance and care to what’s begging for our attention. As with any 3D system we rely on daily, ignoring what’s happening internally doesn’t make the issues disappear; it just fast-tracks its inevitable breakdown and delays the care that’s needed to make the repair.

Becoming curious about our emotions, practicing acceptance, and forgiveness have been seen as weaknesses by our society. We’ve been conditioned not to trust what we’re feeling and to distract ourselves with substances, sex, money, and external validation. But all this does is keep us from tapping into our true power. The kind of power we are born with, grounded in clarity, love, and belief in self.

I was never taught the importance of implementing systems that take care of my mental and emotional health. When challenging feelings and difficult life obstacles showed up for me, I was often told, “It’ll be ok, but next time you must do better,” or “Don’t be sad, do something about it.” And while these sentiments have been central to my appreciation for my independent nature, I now see how they’ve also led me to suppress my emotions and place a metaphorical ceiling on my self-evolution.

Our evolution isn’t guaranteed by aging or achieving material success, but is earned through a consistent commitment to learning to love and care for ourselves. Even if we’ve never seen this growing up, and while the forces that be try to suppress it continuously, the journey of being in tune with who we are and who we come from is our responsibility. And so is cultivating the true power that comes with this kind of self-mastery. Not to just have and hold, but to share within our community and build stronger foundations for authentic connections.

I believe this is the most important work we can do in our lifetimes. Not the daily entering of the matrix and clocking into those 9-5 jobs that we dread going to every time Sunday evening rolls around. But healing those tender parts of us takes real courage and intentional work. And in this process, it’s common to feel like we’re being broken down to be built up again, but as a more resilient and compassionate version of ourselves.

In my experience, healing towards self-evolution isn’t just about fixing what’s “broken”. It’s about addressing the source of the issue and providing what it needs to be nurtured, thereby preventing long-term damage and trauma from neglect. The commitment to our own internal maintenance supports our individual and collective wholeness. Because once we do this, we open up a path towards living in our highest timeline and becoming active co-creators of life… Allowing us to live authentically and aligned.

What continues to help me, time and time again, is finding nurturing practices and communities that reinforce this kind of internal rewiring and help regulate my nervous system. While being intentional about what I consume on all levels, these are a few ways I grow and maintain seeds of healing from the trauma I’ve experienced.

This Substack was born from my deep desire to stop ignoring my intuition and lean into what I’m feeling. I’m excited to explore and share the ideas, practices, and reflections that spark my curiosity on this journey toward deeper self-love and self-discovery. I’m no expert, and I still have so much to learn, but I am deeply committed to evolving into my highest self and bringing my community along the way. My hope is that by sharing in real time, you’ll feel inspired — and supported — in having the courage to listen to the wisdom of your body, too.

I’ll be here every week rambling about:

— Self-love as rebellion
— Movement as somatic therapy
— Feminine energy reflections & astrological insights
— Plant-based healing
— Grounding rituals and mindfulness practices
— Spiritual musings rooted in presence

Perfection has no place here.

This is a space where honesty can be sobering, but clarifying.
A space where vulnerability is honored as courageous strength.

My prayer is that this Substack feels like a soft exhale after trying to hold it all together for too long. Like a mirror, when you’re ready to witness the real you. This is about implementing proactive maintenance, not emergency repairs. Choosing care before burnout forces a breakdown.

Thank you for being here. I hope you stay for a while.

Cx

SELF SERVICE REQUIRED is a reader-supported publication.
